Johanna (Hanna) Burke née Suss was born on October 5, 1926 in Darmstadt, Germany. Her father, Jacob Suss, was a decorated soldier for his service in World War I, while her maternal great-grandfather, Wolf Bodenheimer, had been decorated for campaigns in the 19th century (either the Revolutions of 1848-49 or the Austro-Prussian War in 1866). Jacob and his wife, Bertha, along with Hanna immigrated to the United States in 1938. They became naturalized citizens in 1945. Several of the Bodenheimer siblings were deported to various concentration camps during the war. |
