Grigory Prymak was born in Chernukhi, Ukraine on May 28, 1916 to Stephen and Anastasia Prymak and was raised in the Ukrainian Orthodox tradition. He married Roza Prymak in the summer of 1941 while he was serving in the Soviet Army. Grigory was captured by the Nazis during the war and spent time as a prisoner of war in Buchenwald Concentration Camp where he cut down trees and hauled stones from the quarry. In April 1945, the prisoners stormed the camp watchtowers and took control of Buchenwald. Grigory spent time in the hospital before returning home after liberation. Roza had been serving as a doctor in the Soviet Army and was in Berlin at the end of the war. In 1976, the family moved to Richmond, Virginia. |
