Charles Caldwell, Jr. was born in Greenwood, Mississippi on March 11, 1919. He was drafted into the Army in September 1941 and assigned to the European Theater in April of the following year with the Army Pictorial Service. Stationed in London, England, Charles supervised the operation of a still photographic laboratory, helping to map out the coastline for the Normandy invasion. His brother, William Caldwell, served in the Merchant Marine. Charles was honorably discharged in November 1945 and returned home to Memphis, Tennessee. |

The Charles Caldwell Papers focus primarily on Charles' service in the Army Pictorial Service. These papers include documents, articles, and photographs. Folder 1 contains copies of military documents focused on Charles' discharge in 1945. Folder 2 has copies of two newspaper clippings related to Charles' overseas service, including one focused on his brother's experiences in the Merchant Marine. There is also a copy of a clipping on a photography exhibit of Charles' off-duty photographs in the European Theater done in 2008 at Hampden-Sydney College. Folder 3 holds a copy of a letter written by his commanding officer in praise of Charles to his mother in 1945. Folder 4 contains prints from digital photos of concentration camps taken by Charles. |
