Admin/Biographical History |
Emeric Fischer was born in Romania in 1926 to Gisella and Julius Fischer, a rabbi. Julius warned his congregation to flee, and in 1939, the Fischer family fled Romania, settling in Nairobi, Kenya until immigrating to the United States in 1941. In May 1944, Emeric was drafted into the Army. After basic training at Fort McClellan, AL and Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, Emeric was transferred overseas. Attached to the 70th Infantry Division, he fought up the Rhine River, taking Saarbrucken, Germany. After the war, Emeric worked with the War Crimes branch supervising a group tasked with translating German documents. He was sent to the Russian zone in order to retrieve some documents, and though an enlisted man was given a 2nd Lieutenant's uniform in order to seem more authoritative. Emeric returned to the United States in November 1948. |
