Andrew Bailey volunteered for the Army on January 5, 1941. He was assigned to the 113th Mechanized Cavalry Recc. Regt. At Camp Hood, Tx. In January 1943, Andrew traveled on the U.S. Navy Transport, Elizabeth C. Stanton, for duty overseas. On D-Day, H-Hour plus four, Andrew's tank platoon landed on the beaches of Normandy attached to the 29th Infantry Division. He was wounded once at St. Lo and again in Beeck, Germany, both times returned to active duty. In December 1944 he was dispatched to the Battle of the Bulge. On April 5, 1945, Andrew received his third wound and was returned to the United States by way of the Hospital Ship, U.S.S. Argentina. Prior to leaving, Andrew was witness to the liberation of Buchenwald. For his service, Andrew received the Bronze Star for actions at St. Lo, the Silver Star for actions at Beeck, and an oak leaf cluster to the Bronze Star for actions at St. Vivth, Belgium. Additionally, he was recommended for the Distinguished Service Cross, and received five campaign stars and the silver arrow head for D-Day Activity. He also received the French Croix de Guerre and the British George Medal. |

The Andrew Bailey Papers focus primarily on the WWII service of liberator, Andrew Bailey. These papers include photographs, correspondence, and military documentation from both during and after the war. Folder 1 contains an inventory of the collection. Folder 2 has two copies of a complete account of Andrew's military service. Folder 3 holds photographs and other ephemera during the war. Folder 4 contains maps detailing the route taken by Andrew, and Folder 5 holds two letters written by Andrew to his fiancée, Carolyn Atkinson. One written while he awaited the landing on the beaches of Normandy. It is labeled "overseas, June 5, 44." Folders 6 and 7 primarily contain information after the war. Folder 6 focuses on a 1991 Holocaust Remembrance event which honored Andrew. Folder 7 contains a newspaper clipping documenting the French Jubilee of Liberty medal which was posthumously awarded to Andrew in 1997. |
