Carlson Booth was born on June 3, 1920. On April 16, 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and was eventually assigned to the 27th Evacuation Hospital, originally as an x-ray technician. During his service, he would see action in North Africa, Italy, France, and Germany. Two days after the liberation of Dachau by the 42nd and 45th Infantry Divisions, Carlson and several other members of the medical staff received a tour of the camp. |

The Carlson Booth Papers primarily focus on the liberation of Dachau and its aftermath. These papers include photographs and military documents illustrating Carlson's tour of the camp shortly after liberation. Folder 1 contains donation material, including an inventory and donation acceptance form. Folder 2 holds a short, typed account by Carlson and notes taken by Dianna Gabay. Folder 3 has original images of Dachau scenes made into postcards which appear to have been sent to Carlson's parents, Henry and Myrtle Booth. Folder 4 contains prints of those photographs as well as copies of a photograph of Carlson in 1945. Folder 5 holds a pass granting Carlson permission to tour Dachau, and Folder 6 has an article about Dachau from 1945 and a modern article about the liberation from 2000. |
