William Childers was born in West Virginia on February 22, 1917. He entered the United States Army in 1943. William was assigned to the First Battalion, 222nd Infantry Regiment of the 42nd Infantry Division. Those in the regiment were the first Americans to enter Dachau Concentration Camp. William's brother, Alfred Childers, served as a medic with the 376th Infantry Regiment. |

The William Childers Papers focus primarily on William's service in the First Battalion, 222nd Infantry Regiment of the 42nd Infantry Division. These papers include Army reports and historical records of the 42nd. Folder 1 contains a copy of a report of the initial state of Dachau upon the 42nd's arrival. Folder 2 holds a booklet of copies of photographs of those liberated from various concentration camps taken by the 166th Signal Photo Company. Box 2 contains a bound history of the 42nd Rainbow Division. |
