Edel Thompson (née Holm) was born on January 2, 1932 on Samsø Island in Denmark. In 1940, the Nazis occupied Denmark, and Edel remembers rationing and mining of the waters making travel between islands difficult. Edel's brother in law, Torben Albertus, along with his brothers, Svend Erik Albertus and John Gordon Isberg, were active in the Danish Resistance, smuggling guns and ammunition. In 1943, when the Nazis ordered Danish Jews deported, the Resistance helped to hide and smuggle Jews out of Denmark to Sweden. Danish representatives did not forget the Jews that had been deported, going so far as to send a delegation to Theresienstadt. Edel moved to the United States in 1963 with her first husband. |
