They were sent to Fort Bragg, NC for training in field artillery, and then Wilson was assigned to Battery B of the Fourth Regiment for survey work. All three men had grown up in the Highland Park neighborhood of Richmond and attended John Marshall High School. In September 1942, Wilson arrived at Camp Maxey, TX where he was assigned to the 250th Field Artillery Battalion. In January 1944, Wilson took the HMS Dominion Monarch to the European Theater. Assigned to Swansea, Wales, Wilson's unit guarded a prisoner of war camp and other prisoners at the 84th General Hospital. In July 1944, Wilson landed on the beaches of Normandy. The unit saw altercations at Alençon, France and then moved on to shell Argentan. |
