Erika Danty was born in 1922 in Freiburg, Germany. After Hitler came to power, Erika's father was let go from his job, and his health slowly declined until his death in August 1934. In November 1934, Erika boarded the S.S. New York to the United States. Erika stayed with her uncle in New York City until she finished school. In 1945, Erika married Bernie Danty. She entered the dental field, holding positions at the US Public Health Hospital in Staten Island, NY and later as an instructor with the US Army Dental Corps in Virginia. Years after the war, her mother immigrated to the United States. |

The Erika Danty Papers focus on Erika's experiences as a child in Nazi Germany and her escape to the United States. These papers contain biographical materials which share Erika's One Thousand Children story. Folder 1 contains donation materials, including a donation agreement form and correspondence with Erika. Folder 2 contains a biographical sketch of Erika as well as a speech given by her in 2001. Folder 3 contains a finding aid for the Records of the German-Jewish Children's Aid housed at YIVO Institute for Jewish Research in New York. |
