Edward Fitzgerald was born in 1928 and enlisted in the United States Army in 1944, lying about his age. After basic training at Fort Knox, he arrived in Europe in January 1945. After surrender, his unit was assigned to guard Spandau Prison shortly after the Nazi prisoners were moved there from Nuremberg. As part of the 1st Infantry Division, he also pulled guard duty at the Allied Control Authority building during this time and was involved with the Berlin Airlift. |

The Edward Fitzgerald Papers primarily focus on Edward's memories of Spandau prison and the Nazi prisoners imprisoned there. These papers include correspondence and photographs. Folder 1 contains donation materials, including several donation acceptance forms and thank you letters. Folder 2 has biographical material, including Edward's personal reminiscences. Folder 3 holds copies of photographs of the Nuremberg trials. Folder 4 has Documentary Photo Aids information. Folder 5 contains correspondence between Edward and Albert Speer after his release from Spandau. Folder 6 holds articles, mainly pertaining to the prisoners of Spandau. Folder 7 has correspondence between Edward and the VHM. Folder 8 contains information on Leni Riefenstahl, a German actress who sympathized with the Nazis. Folder 9 holds a 1st Infantry Division patch. Box 2 has an article on Spandau Prison published in the Saturday Evening Post in 1949. |
