Hannah Deutch was born Hannelore Kronheim in Dusseldorf, Germany on July 3, 1922. Hannah's father died when she was only seven years old. After that, she lived in Bochum with her grandmother. She witnessed the burning of her neighborhood's synagogue on Kristallnacht, and in February 1939, a spot for her was secured on a kindertransport to England. Once in England, she was sent to Wilson Green General Hospital to study nursing. In 1941, Hannah joined the British Army as a nurse. She was stationed at Wrexham, Wales until she was transferred to London at the beginning of 1943. She married, Daniel Deutch, a soldier in the Canadian Army in November. Daniel was wounded during D-Day and brought back to London where Hannah was able to see him frequently. She discovered that she was pregnant and was discharged in October 1944. In November, she was allowed passage to Canada as a war bride. After her marriage ended, Hannah lived in several different places before settling in New York. Hannah's mother and stepfather immigrated to Chile, but she later discovered that her grandmother, aunt and uncle perished in the Riga ghetto. |
