Georg Iggers was born in Hamburg, Germany on December 7, 1926 to Alfred and Lizzie Igersheimer. In 1936, Georg's parents realized it was time to leave Germany. They made it to Holland in October 1938, and shortly thereafter left for the United States on the Champlain. The family left New York and settled in Richmond, Virginia where they changed their name to Iggers. Georg went to Binford Middle School before graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School at 15. He went on to graduate from the University of Richmond at 17. After receiving his Ph.D., he taught at schools in Little Rock, Arkansas and was heavily involved in the civil rights movement there. |

The Georg Iggers Papers primarily focus on the Iggers' flight from Germany and Georg's life in the United States. These papers include personal reminiscences. Folder 1 contains a speech given by Georg's sister, Lena, at his 70th birthday and a brief "New Years'" letter describing the major events in Georg's life in 2001. Folder 2 holds several notes taken during an oral history done with Georg in 2012 as well as a donation form. Folder 3 has a clipping from 2001 about Georg speaking at his old middle school, Binford. |
