Bert Mann was born in Selzen, Germany on November 10, 1909. An accomplished athlete, Bert competed in the Maccabiah Games in Palestine in 1935. In 1936, he fled Nazi Germany, finding work with the Thalhimer family in Richmond. In 1942, shortly after marrying Selma Rothschild, Bert joined the Army and was trained as an interpreter and truck driver. He went overseas with Patton's Third Army, serving in France and working as an interpreter in Forchheim, Germany. |

The Bert Mann Papers focus on Bert's athletic career as German Jew and his eventual immigration to the United States and service in the U.S. Army during WWII. These papers include photographs, documents, and correspondence. Folder 1 contains donation information. Folder 2 has several brief accounts of Bert's life. Folder 3 holds several copies of photographs of Bert running and in Army uniform. Folder 4 contains copies of documents, including an affidavit signed by William Thalhimer vouching for Bert's visa to travel to immigrate to Richmond and Army documents from Bert's WWII service. Folder 5 has two copies of sports club invitations and announcements written in German. Folder 6 has correspondence, including a copy of a postcard written in German to Bert while he was still living in Germany. Folder 7 has several newspaper clippings, many focusing on Bert's experiences as a German Jewish athlete. |
