Dr. Bernard Isaacson was born in New York City on September 6, 1899. After medical school, he specialized in Orthopedic Surgery. Bernard entered the United States Army on January 16, 1943, serving as a major in the Army Medical Corps. He was assigned to the 45th Evacuation Hospital and spent over two years in the European Theater, serving in Normandy, Northern France, the Rhineland, the Ardennes, and Central Europe. As a soldier in the 45th Evac Hospital, Bernard saw first-hand the horrors of Buchenwald as it was liberated. Bernard was released from active duty on February 24, 1946 but continued to serve in the Army Reserve until the end of the Korean War. |
