Admin/Biographical History |
Janet Wolff was born Ursula Henrietta Wolff on November 15, 1919 to Alicia (Bernstein) and Fritz Wolff in Germany. The Wolffs immigrated to New York in 1937 with the rise of anti-Semitism. Janet married Frank Wolff in 1941. He was drafted in 1944 and served in the Army Air Forces during the war. Janet's uncle, Arnold Bernstein, had fought for the Germans in World War I. With the rise of anti-Semitism, Arnold was targeted due to his ownership of one of the largest Jewish owned businesses in Germany. He was able to bribe his family's way into Holland, and then boarded the SS Nieuw Amsterdam for New York where he arrived on September 1, 1939. Janet's uncle, Siegfried Aschner, died in Theresienstadt in 1943. Grandmother, Franziska Bernstein, was also murdered in the Holocaust. Siegfried's wife, Elizabeth Aschner (née Bernstein) eventually remarried to Bernhard Kugelmann. Janet's cousin, Anita Treitel, was deported and forced to work. She committed suicide at the age of 22 in 1941 in order to avoid further persecution. Anita's mother, Rosa Treitel, was murdered in Izbica Ghetto in 1942. |
