Emil Leavitt was born in New York in on September 9, 1907. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1942, but attended Officer Candidate School, becoming an officer in 1943. In April 1943, he was assigned to the 7th Replacement Depot in North Africa where he was the headquarters company commander. He later worked as the Information-Education Officer with Allied Force Headquarters in Italy. He returned to the United States in December 1945 after having spent over two years overseas. Emil was relieved of active duty in April 1946; however, he was called back to fight in the Korean War. He received an honorable discharge in April 1953. |

The Emil Leavitt Papers focus primarily on the World War II service of Jewish American Emil Leavitt. These papers include military documents and photographs.
