Ervin Gibbs was born on January 22, 1912. He joined the Army in 1942 and served with the 80th and 90th Infantry Divisions in the European Theater of Operations through France, Luxembourg, and Germany. The 80th is credited with helping to liberate Ebensee, a sub-camp of Mauthausen. |

The Ervin Gibbs Papers focus primarily on Ervin's Army service in the European Theater. These papers include correspondence, military documents, and photographs. Folder 1 contains several military documents including passes, an itinerary, and permission to return home with enemy "trophies." There is also a copy of Ervin's discharge paperwork. Folder 2 has correspondence between Ervin and his wife, Frances primarily written in 1944 while Ervin was stationed in England and France. Folder 3 holds several historical accounts of the 80th Infantry Division. Folder 4 contains an 80th Signal Weekly newsletter from 1945 and a Lightning News newsletter from 1944. Folder 5 holds original photographs picturing Ervin in uniform, some photos of Frances, and scenes of France. Folder 6 has ephemera collected by Frances, which includes several playbills. Folder 7 contains a souvenir copy of the Constitution with amendments. |
