This suitcase belonged to Anna Bellmann, a German born jew who fled Germany in 1941. Bellmann was born in 1883 in Nuremburg, Germany, but was raised in Ausburg, Germany. She married and had two sons. Her husband died when Anna was 50, and just before Hitler's rise to power. Anna decided to flee Germany after the Third Reich began requiring Jews in Germany to identify themselves with the yellow Star of David. One of her son's obtained a Cuban Visa for Anna. Her other son, who had previoulsy fled to France, harbored her before her voyage. Anna used this suitcase during her journey. After spending one and a half years in Cuba, she moved to the States. The suitcase passed to Ethan Isenberg's mother, who passed it on to Ethan. |
