Provenance |
Hermann Hirsch (b. June 4, 1861, d. March 1, 1934) was a German-Jewish painter known for his portraits and landscapes. Hirsch studied at The Academy of Arts of Berlin starting in 1881. His last known painting was completed in 1933. Hirsch committed suicide the following year on March 1. This oil by Hermann Hirsch was included in the estate inherited by the Virginia Holocaust Museum from Susanne B. Hirt, paternal niece of Hermann Hirsch. Ruth Shapiro, Executrix of Miss Hirt's estate writes, "This is likely Dorothea S. Hirsch who was in a tuberculosis clinic on Thueringen and was, according to an account by her step-daughter Rosetta Hirsch, "chained to a deck chair for almost the entire day." This was found in a garden shed behind the home of Miss Hirt in Richmond, VA. |
