Description |
Set of prints of artwork originally created by Bedrich Fritta for his son, Tommy, while imprisoned in Terezin Ghetto. The original booklet was gifted to his son on January 22, 1944, his third birthday. It survived buried in the ground of the camp and was relocated by another prisoner who returned it to Tommy after liberation. |
Provenance |
The Fritta family was deported from Prague to Terezin on December 4, 1941, before Tommy's first birthday. Bedrich was forced to draw propaganda for the Nazis while in Terezin, but after an attempt to smuggle several of his works out in July 1944 was discovered, he and his family were imprisoned in the Small Fortress in Terezin. Shortly thereafter, Bedrich was deported to Auschwitz where he died. Johanna died of typhus in Terezin. Tommy was adopted by a friend of his father's and former prisoner, Leo Haas. The images are used for Holocaust education programming designed for young children in Israel. This particular set was purchased in Israel by a friend of Chava Maimon's as a gift for her in 2018. |
